Divided by Jesse Feinberg

http://www.theory11.com/tricks/divided-jesse-feinberg.php

So, we all know that it's the wrong corner that has the index, but besides that, how does he get that fake index there? It's not a specially printed card is it? Does he draw it on? Or possibly a sticker? I don't think so though, because it's a downloadable trick, which means it can't have a gimmick, right?

Any thoughts?
-PTG

Smoking aluminum foil

So here is a trick I saw once and after 15 years I still have not been able to figure out how it was done, my father either.

the set up is a glass of water and a piece of aluminum foil in and half sq + or -, or foil wrapper from gum.... etc.... water is real water, foil is real foil, usually provided by onlookers.

they guy dips the foil in water, smooths it out folds it multiple times into a tiny square, big show about pressing really hard on the foil after its in a little square, he places he small foil piece on your skin and within seconds the foil gets really hot (enough to burn and scar skin) and will sometimes even eat through the foil after opening you can see it. There is a whitish residue left on the foil.

I figure the guy has to have something on his fingers that he rubs onto the foil that reacts with the foil and water. I sure as hell havent been able to figure it out apparently he learned the trick from an old firefighter.... he wont tell anyone, my father has known the guy for 30 years.

waaaaaaayyyyy back in high school and college I asked a few science teachers but they had no idea.....

any ideas?

Chavez School of Magic

I know that their are a lot of great magicians that have graduated from this school through the years. I just recently checked into it and the school is still in operation just outside of L.A. I sent a email to inquire about the school and a few days later I recieved a packet in the mail from them explaining some of their courses and options. They have a at home study course that is by mail. It was a lot more affordable than I ever thought it would be and I am seriously considering taking this course. I was wondering if anyone here had and dealings with the home study course or if you would reccomend it. I'm into magic as a hobby and I do not see it ever becoming a career for me but I do want to be as good as I can be with it. Any thoughts from anyone?? Thanks

What is magic and how do we create it?

Do we create magic from the props we buy from the magic shop? Perhaps from the props we make, or everyday objects such as money, photographs or even envelopes or pieces of paper? You may even think magic is created by you, your persona or alter ego.

Personally, for me, magic comes from the mind and soul, more specifically, the mind of your audience, whether that be one or two people or a thousand on stage. Of course, your persona, your charisma as a performer and the props we use are key to helping to create magic, but ultimately it is created in the minds of the audience and as a performer it is your job to help build up the image of magic and impossibility in the mind of your spectators. After all, without an audience to engage with we would all simply be weird little men (and women) playing with our balls…and cups.

When you perform magic you must make a conscious effort to believe it yourself. If you don’t believe what you are doing is really happening that will shine through in your performance and the audience will pick up on it.

One of my favourite routines to perform is the classic coin under the watch. Without going into too much detail I show two coins, a 10 pence piece and a 2 pence piece. I place these on the spectators open palms. They choose a coin to use, I then make it vanish in impossible circumstances and it reappears underneath the spectators watch.

On paper it sounds great, however, to make it credible, to make is something of substance, to make it a journey for the spectator you must break down each step and work on it until it becomes second nature, from the scripting of the patter, to the audience management to the mechanics. The routine itself is fairly easy. It uses a coin unique gimmick, for those of you not familiar with this fantastic prop is consists of a specially machined coin. The main part of the coin is a magnetic shell of a two pence piece. You can separate one side of the coin to reveal the face of the 10 pence piece. When separated they look like two separate coins, but they can magnetically lock together into one coin, allowing you to perform a very fair and very clean vanish of the 10 pence piece.

Whilst you talk and engage with your spectator you palm a identical 10 pence piece in your hand and load it under their watch whilst having them open their palm face up. It’s very gutsy and I get a rush every single time I do it, but I have never been caught.

The key piece of magic before the reveal is the vanish of the coin. I make sure to role up my sleeves, I out stretch my arms from my body; I perform it in the centre of a group of people, directly under their noses. I don’t make a big deal of this, I don’t say why, I just do it. Subconsciously the spectators know I am not sleeving the coin or dropping it into a pocket as the conditions I have imposed upon myself have cancelled out these well known methods. I place the gimmicked coins into my hand and pull the gimmick out (to the audience I have put 10 pence and 2 pence into my hand and have now taken out the 2 pence piece from my closed fist). I then proceed to act as if the 10 pence is still in my closed palm. I make minor movements conveying it is indeed still there, even though it isn’t. I really believe it is there. I even let my fist sag a small amount as if the added weight of the coin is pulling my hand down. Again, I don’t mention any of this, I just do it and believe it and hopefully the audience will pick up on it.

I ask someone to place their hand onto mine. I ask them if they can feel it getting warmer. 9 times out of 10 they say yes!

I milk this moment for all it’s worth. I am so far ahead of them. I slowly rub my fingers against my hand and then show the coin has vanished. This always gets a gasp as it is so clean and so fair. It really does look like real magic. Whilst I talk to the spectator I will usually roll the gimmick coin between my fingers as a neat little flourish and then have them hold it. I ask the spectator if they felt anything. Sometimes they are so caught up in the moment they say they did. I ask them to slowly turn over their hand and look under their watch. I make the point of asking them to look themselves rather than me grab their wrist and turn it over for them. I try to make everything as fair as I can.

At this point in time I don’t say a word. I let their natural reactions develop. After a few seconds I usually get some screams, gasps or nervous laughter, sometimes they are so stunned they don’t say or do anything and simply stare at their watch, so after 5 or 6 seconds I take control of the audience again.

Replay that routine in your mind. It is very strong. On more than one occasion I have had ladies drop their wine glasses and I have had men swear at me. I believe it is because I meticulously plan every stage of the routine and believe what I am doing is really happening. All of these minor but important details help create something much bigger.

Another magician can perform the same routine with the same patter but if he doesn’t believe and act as if the coin is really in his hand and doesn’t truly believe he vanishes in thin air it won’t get half of the reaction I would get.

After performing magic for five years in table hopping, wedding, dinner party and strolling environments I have realised the collective importance of these minor details and the overall impact they have within the minds of the spectators. That is where magic is, and we as performers need to stimulate and nurture the imagination of our audience.

Tony.
