Hey guys!

Another magic forum I'm a part of is having a competition right now for an original trick, and if it fools everyone on that forum then the creator gets $100!

My idea was to work together here on this forum to create a trick, I'll submit it there, and if it wins then I'll use that money to create a similar competition here!

So here is my open challenge to SOMF to create an original trick that would fool magicians

END TRANSMISSION.

JUNE/JULY 2011 - A Card Trick

I have an idea of a card effect that I really want to make work, I have various half-baked methods to get the effect done but I would love to have some other people come up with ideas of how this could be done.

Here is the effect I want to achieve:

The spectator shuffles the deck, then the magician takes the deck back and asks the audience to name any card. For example they name 4H, the magician pulls out the 4H and places it face up on the table. He does this three more times so there are 4 random cards face up on the table. The magician now patters, and then speaks about the value of each card. The cards in this example are...

4H 8S 9D 6C

All four cards are said to be indicator cards. With no moves, the magician says the 4H indicates that there is an Ace four cards down. The spectator deals and there is an ace. He tells the spectator that the 8S means we should dig down and the eigth card will be an ace, the spectator deals and lo and behold the eighth card is an ace.
The effect proceeds like this until all the aces are found.

-----------------

That is the effect I want to achieve. I want it to seem like the spectator shuffles the deck then merely calls out four random cards, and then when the magician says deal to the values there are all the aces. I do not know if this effect is in print anywhere, but I have a small idea how I could make it work.

-----------------------

The idea that I have is to have the four aces already located on the top of the deck, without the spectator knowing. This could be done after the spectator has shuffled by culling the aces to the top of the deck. Now, the main idea I have for the locating part is this:

When the spectators shout a random card, in this case the 5C, as you spread through the deck to find it, you are basically going to secretly cull 4 cards and slot them above the first ace, so that the fifth card from the top would be an ace. Then as you take out the 5C you can square the deck up and then deal five down.

This is my idea, and there are many problems and I KNOW there is people on this forum that could make this effect really something great.

A Few Jardine Ellis Secrets by George Johnson

Jason has published a tiny part of the online booklet "A Few Jardine Ellis Secrets"
here, in his posting Getting your 'Stooge' on stage.

This is really a great booklet, so I think, it is good to share it with you guys.

This book is on the TLP - project site, in html format. It is in public domain, but not all
of our members have presently access, to the TLP - project site.

So I have made an PDF ebook out of this. I have it converted to PDF format, I have
it reformatted, and I have rearranged the chapters a bit. Just enjoy.

http://somfv3.com/secretforums/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=330

- gismo -

Under-Over - Joshua Jay

Here is a book for April, be sure to read through and post your thoughts! This is a great download for any young magician on performing magic. I have read through it a bit and I must say it is fantastic. It is like a mini Strong Magic for younger performers! I'm sure lots of the SOMF community will enjoy this, even the older members. You can download it here after you sign up on the site! Check out the link and the description below for more info!

QUOTE

My original idea was simple: I wanted to write a manual for young magicians, and I wanted it to be free. Being a magician can be tough, and so can being a teenager. Being both presents a unique set of opportunities and challenges. The booklet I’ve written, and present to you here at Vanishing Inc Magic FOR FREE, is this idea come to life. I’m speaking here to young, serious magicians, but I hope that the tricks and advice I include will also be of interest to older, more seasoned practitioners.

So you’re a magician and you’re young. Your audience will notice your age; there’s no way around it. “Wow, he looks like he’s still in school,” a woman might whisper to her husband. “How good could he possibly be?” the husband might reply. The first part of this book, Under (as in under 18), is intended to help you find ways to make your age work for you rather than against you.

The second part of the book, Over, is the part you’ll want your parents to read. Make no mistake—I hope you read it, too, but parents write to me all the time with questions such as, “Is this a good hobby for my son?” or “Is my daughter too young to become a magician?” or, a personal favorite, “Can you actually make a career out of this?” I’m in your corner here, and in Over I’ll make sure they see magic for what it is. (Oh, and check out the part where I tell them it’s okay to miss school for magic conventions!)

In the pages to come, I’ll answer as honestly as I can some of the most frequently asked questions I’ve received over the years. But there’s one question I won’t be addressing: “Should I become a magician?” If you don’t know the answer to that question, without hesitation, then you aren’t serious about magic. That’s fine—this stuff isn’t for everyone.

Most young people drift out of magic because they got into it for the wrong reasons. Some people get into magic because they want to know how stuff is done or because they think it’s easy once they know the secret. Some older ones are just looking for a way to get a date. Others are allured by cool-looking gadgets. But these reasons become unfulfilling; I mean, there’s only so much shelf space for unused magic. Most of these kids fade away when they discover girls or basketball. But there are a few of us who stay with it because we realize what magic really has to offer.

When I started in magic I was surrounded by an overwhelmingly supportive group of family, friends, and magicians. None of them charged me for advice, nor will I charge you. In a few years you will be a seasoned, adult performer, and invariably someone young will seek out advice from you. I hope this book and the spirit it is presented inspires you to share what you learned.

Download Under, Over now, for free!

Enjoy guys!

Mike
